You are new dog owner? So you are probably wondering if vaccination is necessary. The answer is YES!

It is recommended to get your animal the basic vaccines that will protect him or her against the most common diseases, as well as an anti-rabies vaccine. “The rabies vaccine is very important; rabies is deadly for your animal, but could also be fatal for human beings”.Your dog can begin receiving its first vaccines as early as between six and eight weeks of age. For more information, please contact your veterinarian.

Basic vaccination:

  • D-H-P-P. (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza)

When to vaccinate? Every three years

  • Rabies : When to vaccinate? Every three years

Other vaccines:

  • Bordetella (kennel cough): only if the animal is at risk (obedience training with other dogs, kennel, boarding kennel, grooming, dog parks, etc.) When to vaccinate? Annually.

  • Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease): until recently, dogs were only vaccinated if they travelled to Ontario, USA or Europe. But for the past few summers, many cases have been reported in Québec, so it is advised to vaccinate. When to vaccinate? Annually.

  • Leptospirosis: this disease can be transmitted by rodents and racoons. The vaccine was introduced in 2001 since several cases were observed in Québec. When to vaccinate? Annually.

  • Heartworm: the larvae are transmitted by mosquitoes so we prevent during summer. The medication can be administered through injection, application of a liquid on the dog’s neck or orally. When to vaccinate? From May to June.
